Wauwatosa Chamber to Sponsor Forum Regarding Advisory Referendum Question

Discussion Question: City of Wauwatosa Advisory Referendum Question – April 3, 2012

“This is an advisory referendum question on whether to reduce the number of representatives on the Wauwatosa Common Council. The Council currently has sixteen (16) members, two (2) from each of the eight (8) districts. A “yes” vote would indicate that the voters are in favor of reducing the number of positions at this time. A “no” vote would indicate a desire to retain the current Council size.

Should the Wauwatosa Common Council reduce the number of representatives on the Common Council? ____ Yes ____ No

When: Thursday, March 15, 7:00-8:30 p.m.

Where: Wauwatosa City Hall, Civic Center Hall – Lower Level, 7725 W. North Avenue, Wauwatosa

On election day, Tuesday, April 3, Wauwatosa residents will have an opportunity to voice their opinion on an advisory referendum as to whether the Common Council should remain at 16 members or be reduced in number. The current members of the Common Council were virtually evenly split on this governance question. Council members did, however, share agreement that it is in the interest of the public to objectively educate the community, to the extent possible, on this matter so informed voters may cast their vote.

The Wauwatosa Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring an educational forum inteneded to inform the public on this timely question. The forum will include a panel comprised of past and current Council members and a former Mayor. It will be moderated by Rob Henken, president of the nonpartisan Public Policy Forum. The event will be open to the public and allow for questions and answers of panel members. The forum will be recorded and broadcast on public access television to provide relevant perspectives as to the referendum question.

Invited Host/Moderator: Rob Henken, president Public Policy Forum

Established in 1913, the Milwaukee-based Public Policy Forum is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing the effectiveness of government in southeastern Wisconsin through objective research of public policy issues.

Invited Panel Members:

Jim Benz, Mayor of Wauwatosa (1976-1984), Wauwatosa Alderman (1974-1976) Owner: J. Benz Realty, LLC

Craig Maher, Wauwatosa Alderman (2004-2009), Professor, Government Studies, UW-Oshkosh

Dennis McBride, Wauwatosa Alderman (2008-present), Practicing Attorney

Joe Ptaszek, Wauwatosa Alderman (1984-2000); Retired Educator
